How To Choose Granite Stone Tiles For Flooring

Granite is a stone that is mined at a depth of several kilometers in underground mines. The raw material looks like huge fragments, from which huge rectangular blocks are then cut. Then these blocks are cut into granite slabs 1.5 meters long, 0.35-1.25 meters wide and 20-35 millimeters thick. They are the ones that are displayed in the shop windows.

Gabbro and labradotir are often mistakenly called granite. These natural stones are similar in properties and appearance to granite. But the labradotir, due to some of the minerals that make up its composition, does not tolerate the environment well. For this reason, it is not used for outdoor decoration. Gabbro has a solid black color and a polished surface. Therefore, it is used for interior decoration and the manufacture of monuments.

Granite must be able to choose. For this, some points must be taken into account. Here are the most important ones:

  • In different places of extraction, granite has a unique natural color. Therefore, it is impossible to obtain material of the same shade in two different quarries.
  • Granite tiles are usually cut to order in a special workshop. Most often, tiles are ordered in sizes 600 by 600 and 300 by 600 with a thickness of 20-30 millimeters. For cutting granite slabs, special machines are required. Therefore, it will not work to cut the material on its own.
  • An important point: the larger the size of the tile, the more beautiful the floor will look in the end, but this in turn complicates its installation. There are two reasons for this:
  • heavy weight, due to which it can easily break in half;
  • harder to level up.
  • It is also worth knowing that the thickness of the selected granite tiles should depend on the loads on the floor and on the characteristics of the room itself.

When choosing granite, it is also worth remembering that there are three types of stone processing:

  • polished.
  • Polished.
  • Heat treated.

Specifications:

The polished tile has a mirror surface. This type of processing is considered the most beautiful and at the same time very slippery. At the same time, it is easiest to scratch it.

Polished granite tiles have a surface on which a natural pattern is visible, but unlike polished tiles, they do not shine at all.

The heat-treated tile was subjected to high temperature gas jet treatment. After that, it becomes rough and has no shine.
