What does a Japanese bed look like?

Traditional Japanese bed made of natural wood. The berth is a frame made of wood with two carrying bars and parallel planks placed on them. Usually such a bed has four legs in the corners, but if the bed is too wide, then the fifth one is sure to be installed in the center.

The legs of the Japanese bed are usually thick and are not right in the corners, but at some distance to the middle. This creates the feeling that the bed is floating above the floor. Place under the bed can be used to store bedding or other items. There are some varieties of beds, in the design of which the legs are not provided.

This type is not quite acceptable for a European person, in particular due to hygienic considerations. People suffering from allergies to dust, it is better to buy Japanese beds with legs or pick up high mattresses. Sleep & fly mattress is perfect for such beds.

How to make a Handmade Japanese bed

The Japanese-style bed is my first attempt to do something with my own hands. And I am very pleased with how everything turned out. If you have any questions along the way, do not hesitate to ask.

This manual will be more of an inspiration than a walkthrough. The chip design of the bed is that it is made without a single screw (in fact, I used 2 screws, but you can do without them). The creation took me about 16 hours and only 70 euros.

Step 1: Warning Before starting to build such a bed, I recommend that everyone properly master the skills of working with a basic and professional tool, otherwise its assembly may turn into a living hell (you will have to cut a lot of wood with your hands). Only of course if you do not like this kind of meditation.

Step 2: Materials

My bed is made under a mattress measuring 140 by 200 cm. Here is what I bought: 20 spruce boards (2cm x 12cm x 200cm) 2 spruce beams (8cm x 20cm x 200cm) 2 spruce beams (3cm x 30cm x 200cm) The materials took about 70 euros. I strongly recommend buying a tree already sawn to the size you need.

Step 3: Planning the excavation

Remember, we do not use screws, the method of fixing the elements is different - you see it in the photo. I made 20 notches 2 cm wide. You can make them cutter or circulating saw. I used the second and chisel. Excavations are made at a distance of 8 cm from each other.
